Australian mattress size guide
Australian mattress sizes differ from American and British ones, which is the single most expensive mistake buyers make when ordering an imported bed. Use the dimensions below in millimetres, and check the room minimums before you order.
| Size | Dimensions | Minimum room | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single | 920 x 1880 mm | 2.4 x 2.8 m | Children and bunks |
| King single | 1070 x 2030 mm | 2.5 x 3.0 m | Teens and taller solo sleepers |
| Double | 1370 x 1880 mm | 2.8 x 3.0 m | Solo adults and guest rooms |
| Queen | 1530 x 2030 mm | 3.0 x 3.2 m | Most Australian couples |
| King | 1830 x 2030 mm | 3.4 x 3.4 m | Couples wanting space, co-sleeping |
| Super king | 2030 x 2030 mm | 3.6 x 3.6 m | Large main bedrooms |
Choosing firmness with your size
Once the size is settled, firmness is the decision that matters. Side sleepers generally prefer medium, back sleepers medium-firm, and stomach sleepers or heavier bodies firm. Couples who disagree should look at flippable or adjustable-layer mattresses rather than compromising on a single feel.
Bases, slats and warranties
Most ten-year mattress warranties require a supportive base with slats no more than 75 millimetres apart. An unsuitable base is the most common reason a sagging claim is declined, so check yours before delivery day.

Mattress sizing questions
Is an Australian queen the same as a US queen?
No. An Australian queen is 1530 x 2030 mm, wider and longer than a US queen. Imported mattresses will leave gaps in Australian bed frames and will not fit Australian fitted sheets properly.
Is a double bigger than a queen?
It is narrower and shorter. A double is 1370 x 1880 mm against a queen at 1530 x 2030 mm, so anyone over 180 cm should choose a 2030 mm length.
How much space do I need around the bed?
Allow 600 mm of walking space on each side you use, and 900 mm in front of a wardrobe so doors and drawers open fully.
